THE STORY OF JODRELL BANK
SQUINT/OPERA
Working with the talented team at Squint Opera and directed by Daniel Lusby, I was responsible for creating a series of VFX shots that illustrate how radio waves are used to gather information about our universe through the massive dishes at Jodrell Bank. This exhibition was part of a newly built pavilion at Jodrell Bank, which has a design reminiscent of a Bond villain lair. The exhibition itself incorporates the metalwork from the site into the displays, adding an immersive, industrial feel. I was particularly thrilled to work on this project as I regularly cycle past the observation dish and am in awe of its sheer size.
One of the highlights of the project was recreating what pulsars look like, which was an exciting challenge. Representing these distant cosmic objects visually was both an artistic and scientific endeavor, and I thoroughly enjoyed the creative process of bringing them to life.
Another major challenge of the project was creating VFX that would be projected across 20+ projectors over a curved screen at over 8K resolution. Regular visits to the site were essential for testing the shots and fine-tuning the camera moves to ensure the VFX fit perfectly with the projections, creating a seamless and impactful viewing experience.
